about

Addiction is a disease of the body and the mind. Even though there is more information then ever before about methamphetamine abuse in small town America, millions of families feel alone in their battle against the demons of addiction that live in their loved ones. 'Cope' is a personal portrait of one family's struggle to reconcile the struggles of this hereditary disease with the desire to love as a functional unit.

Samantha shares the story of her family that continues to fall, generation after generation into this cycle of addiction. She unfolds her experience of turmoil and abuse with parents John and Shelley: two co-dependent addicts who never stood a chance. She introduces the toll they have taken on her and her siblings Justine and Jake. While the youngest child Justine looks towards the future for a better life, we find Jake has chosen a darker path.

Shelley is confronted about her addiction and the separation of her family. The denial her children speak of shows through. Her ability to connect with reality has disappeared much like the innocence of her children. Her children have accepted that their mother will never own up to her disease. However, they still grieve the loss of another member of their family to addiction.
